Many users have set their Internet browsers to open files when they click on them, rather than to bring up a dialogue box that will let them choose whether to open or save the file. We recommend that you save files that you want to download, rather than open them in your browser. Once they are downloaded, you can open the files like you would any other that is on your computer. This will not only speed up processing, but it will also allow some of the more sophisticated parts of the program to work.
If you don't get the choice about saving when you want to download a report, here's how to change the setting.
For Windows prior to Vista:
- Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer). When you are looking at "My Documents" you are using Windows Explorer.
- Tools, Folder Options, File Types
- Find XLS and highlight
- Click on Advanced
- Check confirm open after download
- OK
- Close
You might have to re-start your computer for the setting change to take effect.
For Windows Vista/Internet Explorer
- Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools and then Internet Options.
- Click on the security tab and uncheck the box next to "Enable Protected Mode".
- Close all Internet Explorer 8 (IE 8) windows and then open IE 8.
- Click on Tools and then Internet Options again.
- Click on the button for Custom Level.
- Scroll down to the Downloads section.
- Under File Download click on the bubble next to Enable then click on OK to close the Security Settings window and OK again to close the Internet Options Window.
- Close and reopen Internet Explore
- After you click Download File, a File Download dialog box will open asking if you want to open or save the file. To save the file on your PC, click Save. IE will open the "Save As" dialog box; here you will choose a location for the file, such as My Documents or the Desktop.
If that doesn't work, you may need to tweak the registry. Here's how to do that: registry tweaks
