Circular references are often intentional. An example would be interest income increasing cash, which increases interest income. Excel uses "Iterations" to solve circular references. If you get a screen that tells you that you have circular references, you have "Iterations" turned off.
To turn Iterations back on, choose Tools/Options/Calculations and click the "Iteration" checkbox. You can leave it permanently checked.
